Joseph Ratzinger served the Nazi party in the Hitler Youth from 1941 until the Nazi government collapsed in 1945. To defend him, they say he was compelled to join, but he would not have been imprisoned if he refused to join, as the regime typically did not imprison children. (He was a teenager when he joined the Hitler Youth.)

Later in life, he chose a new name: Pope Benedict XVI.
