Catholic Popes Say, Take Their Bibles Away

I found this old newspaper that described a pope's curse he spoke against an American Bible society.

Pope Gregory XVI in 1844 declared non-Latin Bibles should be wrested from the hands of the flock of the faithful.

"Moreover we confirm and renew the decrees recited above, delivered in former times by apostolic authority against the publication, distribution, reading, and possession of books of the Holy Scriptures translated into the vulgar tongue."

Gregory XVI condemned unauthorized vernacular Bibles in his letter Inter Praecipuas May 8, 1844 (paragraph 12) original Latin

A "vernacular" Bible is a translation in the language actually used by the people, rather than Latin. In other words, it's a Bible we can understand. And the Catholic Popes called this evil.
