What does this mean: He got saved

When we lead others to Jesus, sometimes we might say.... that person "got saved". And yet the person remains on Earth and is still subject to suffering, persecution, and trouble from this world. What does it mean, to be saved? If they are "saved" then why have they not yet been rescued from this evil world? Are they yet saved?

When a person first believes, it would be truthful to say they are added to the church. Or, they became a believer. What do the apostles say, when they convinced others of the truth? Peter said this:

Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. Acts 2:41 KJV

When someone believes, as we do, they are added to the Lord's flock.

Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved. Acts 2:47 KJV

New believers are added to the church. It is to be understood that the "church" is what is built by the Lord, and not to be confused with man-made churches. Believers are added to the church made without hands. And they should be saved. It is not written that they already were saved, but that in the future they should be saved.... if they continue in the truth. Whoever follows the Lord's instructions, finds salvation. The man who goes his own way after he first believed is allowed to depart, but that is not the way that leads to being saved.

If being saved is the same as receiving salvation, then the next verse makes it clear that this is a future event, not something we achieved the moment we first believed.

And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. Romans 13:11 KJV

The apostle did not claim to have already been saved or to have received salvation, but speaks of it as a future event. He does, however, claim to believe. He believed.... and awaited salvation.

If we continue to follow the Lord Jesus Christ, living according to his teachings, then we shall be saved from this evil world and receive salvation.

Those of us believers still in the world carrying around a heavy body of flesh and blood should continue to follow Jesus so that we may truly be saved.

I like the phrases used by Peter. Instead of saying he got saved, we could say:

He was added to the church.

Or simply:

He believed.

Paul gave this sober warning: We should continue to battle against the sin nature of the flesh so we can be saved, so we are not cast away.

But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway. 1 Corinthians 9:27 KJV

He acknowledges the possibility of being cast away, something that could even happen to an apostle! Someone who is cast away is not saved. So becoming a new believer is not necessarily the same as being saved. Salvation depends on the believer enduring in the faith to the end.

These men finished their race well. They are saved. We should do the same: keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus.
