Canadians Protest Against Draft Into World War

I have had dreams about a draft in America for the next world war, so this historical piece is, I believe, soon to be pertinent once again: When a government forces its people to fight in a war....

Part of a large crowd of some 2,000 Montreal students of French language schools parade in protest to conscription. They marched over a three-mile route terminating with a 20-minute silence at Phillips Square. The demonstrators were quiet during the march. Here, they hold signs - one bearing the word "Conscription" and a huge death's head. Signs at center, and right, read: "Does India Have Conscription?" and "Ireland Does Not Have Conscription."


During World War II, Ireland held its stance on neutrality and avoided being drawn into the war.
